Christmas Concert: Saturday 10 December 2011 It was with evident
enjoyment that the Shaldon Singers took to the stage for their Christmas
Concert. The evening opened with Elgar’s From
the Bavarian Highlands, each of the six delightful pieces showing a
different picture of Bavarian life. The various sections of the choir performed
to full effect as each took their turn to sing the haunting melodies, ably
conducted by Nigel Crabtree. This was followed by Parry’s Blest
Pair of Sirens. Accompanist Aubrey Maybin moved to the organ and the church
was filled with sound. The singers rose to this challenge and sang ‘with
harmonious voices’. The second half of the concert featured carols for the choir and old favourites for everyone that the audience sang with gusto. These were interspersed with two readings: The Iron Winter and the Raggedy Old Man, read by Ian Reader, and Pam Ayres’ Goodwill To All Men – Give Us Your Money, read by Beryl McNeil. During the evening, this well-balanced programme demanded a range of singing styles, from soft and lyrical to stately and loud. The choir did not disappoint and were rewarded by enthusiastic applause at the end.
Spring Concert: Saturday 21 May 2011 For Mozart aficionados, the Shaldon Singers Spring Concert was a treat not to be missed. The excellent professional orchestra and soloists created a magnificent sound in St Peter's Church, and the Singers rose to the occasion in Mozart's Vespers and the Coronation Mass with a lovely tonal quality and sensitive phrasing in their singing. The Jupiter Symphony, performed by the Shaldon Sinfonietta, was enchanting for choir and audience alike. One satisfied member of the audience wrote: 'I congratulate the Shaldon Singers on their excellent Mozart concert. The singing and playing were a delight and warmly received by the audience. It is not often you hear a Bravissimo! so loudly proclaimed at the end of a concert in the church!'
The retiring collection raised £131 for the Schools Workshop Beyond the Door of the Den, supported by the Shaldon Festival and the Helen Foundation, which took place in mid-June. Past Concerts
