Minutes of General Meeting held on 13 June 2008

Prior to the Meeting there was a talk and presentation by Gordon White on behalf of the Devon Air Ambulance.  This gave a fascinating insight into how the service operates and the large amount of money that the charity needs to raise each year to run the service.

4 Matters arising

None.

5 Current Association activities and Planning

5.1    Attention was drawn to the list of Committee Officers shown on the Agenda. Gerry thanked the past Chairman Roger Tyler for his hard work.

5.2      Post Office Closure

A Meeting had been held on the 22nd May to discuss a plan to fight the announcement that it would close at the end of August.  The Chairman was very pleased with the response with over 80 people attending.  The Association has written a letter to protest.  Gerry made it clear that it was very important that everybody should write their own letter as the greater number of complaints would have the most effect.  Important points made were:

A.            Over 60’s in the village were 40% of population with many over 80. The National average was 20%

B.            Devon already had a higher number of closures than other counties.

C.           To access either Dawlish or Ashleigh Way Post Offices was extremely difficult for the elderly or disabled.  Both required long walks, over hilly terrain to and from the bus stops and a further walk to reach the Post Office.

D.           Figures from the Office for National Statistics showed that the area was at the higher end of the scale regarding Services, losing the P/O and Shop would only add to this.

5.3      Planning

A.            Old Barn, 25 Teignmouth Road: appeal against refusal.

B.            28 Windward Lane: passed for 1 House in the garden.

C.           Holcombe Hall extension: refused by The Teignbridge Development Committee on the grounds of over-development and excessive scale.

D.           71 Teignmouth Rd: passed for the house to be demolished with two houses built with access from the main highway

5.4     Summer Fayre.

The residents Association has been asked to provide and run the refreshments at the Village Hall Fayre. Carol Chambers asked for contributions of food and circulated list for names, phone numbers and whether it would be a sweet or savoury item.

6 Any Other Business

A.            Help was requested by Village Hall Committee to decorate the main hall at the end of July/August.  Offers of help please give your name to a committee member.

B.            Lin Watson asked what the general feeling was about the removal of the phone box especially as mobile phone signals are poor in the village.  The box is only operated by a card, it would be more appropriate to have coin box for emergencies.  The Committee will discuss at next committee meeting.

C.           A Member queried the current position about the Children’s’ Play Area as there seemed to be some uncertainty about what would happen to it once the new Car park was made.  The Chairman assured everyone that there was a firm plan to re‑site the equipment to the south western side of the new hall and that it would take place in August /September.  The original equipment was reusable and funds were available to rebuild with the specialist ground surface needed.

D.           A Coffee morning in the village hall arranged by Gerry Chambers to bring people living on there own together had been a success. He would like to arrange one more but open it up to couples.

E.            The Chairman said he was keen to get more co-operation between all the local groups to pool ideas.  Information could be put either on the website or on a notice at the Hall

F.            Sam King is concerned about the state of drains in the village as often there are problems after heavy rain with flooding and drain covers being lifted.  He would like people to note anything in their area to report it to the Committee with a photograph so this information can be passed to the right authority.

7 Date of the next meeting

Friday 12th September.  The speaker will be talking about the Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve.

The meeting closed at 9.35 pm.
